Stocks finished with modest gains in Thursday trading after pulling back from a rally that pushed share prices near their highest levels of the year. The Dow Jones industrial average had been up as much as 105 points after index components Caterpillar Inc., Travelers Cos. and McDonald's Corp. all beat earnings expectations.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 38.60, or 0.4 percent, to close at 11,146.57.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.09, or 0.2 percent, to 1,180.26.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 2.28, or 0.1 percent, to 2,459.67.
For the week:
The Dow is up 83.79, or 0.8 percent.
The S&P is up 4.07, or 0.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 9.10, or 0.4 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 718.52, or 6.9 percent.
The S&P is up 65.16, or 5.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 190.52, or 8.4 percent.
