Summary Box: Harley profit, but sales not humming

PEELING OUT: Harley-Davidson more that tripled its profit in the third quarter, but not because of muscular sales. It was the company's financial services division powering a net income of $88.8 million and not consumers who, in this economy, are decidedly not born to be wild with their money.

RUBBER HITS THE ROAD: Sales are falling; 7.7 percent worldwide and 9.4 percent in the U.S. Harley, now facing the realities of a global economy short on fuel, is slimming down and forecasting more modest sales for 2010.

STREET CRED: The company has won over a lot of investors by playing tough in labor negotiations and shares have been rising since early last year, but the road ahead looks rough for sales. Shares of Harley-Davidson Inc. tumbled 6.7 percent, or $2.17, to $30.32 Tuesday.
