UMass Memorial to cut 350 jobs

Officials at UMass Memorial Health Care, the dominant hospital system in central Massachusetts, say they are cutting the equivalent of 350 jobs.

President and Chief Executive John O'Brien says the cuts, first reported by the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester, are part of an effort to trim $27 million from the chain's $2.5 billion budget because of a leveling off of demand for inpatient services and pressure from insurers.

The cuts include the layoffs of about 130 workers, the elimination of 120 unfilled jobs, and a reduction in hours for the equivalent of 100 full-time workers.

The cuts will affect a variety of jobs from nurses to marketing staffers.

The system, which runs hospitals in Worcester, Leominster, Fitchburg, Clinton, Marlborough and Palmer, employees about 13,700.
