The Glendale City Council has voted to purchase the remainder of its lease on a sports complex near the University of Phoenix Stadium.
The Glendale Youth Sports Complex is a 14-acre property, featuring soccer and football fields with restrooms, locker rooms and concession facilities. It serves as a site for major special events, such as the Fiesta Bowl football clinics and game day events.
The property was developed as part of an obligation to the NFL's Arizona Cardinals and Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority to provide overflow parking for games.
Glendale has been leasing the property at a total cost of $15.9 million over 25 years. Buying the complex saves the city $4.5 million, lowering the total cost to $11.5 million. The financing will come through the city's recent bond sale.
