Stocks ended an erratic session with a slender gain Wednesday as rising commodities prices offset disappointment over an unexpected drop in home sales. Gains in commodities drove the shares of energy and materials-producing companies higher, lending support to the overall stock market.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.51, or 0.01 percent, to 10,466.44.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.57, or 0.2 percent, to 1,120.59.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 16.97, or 0.8 percent, to 2,269.64.
For the week:
The Dow is up 137.55, or 1.3 percent.
The S&P is up 18.12, or 1.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 57.95, or 2.6 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,690.05, or 19.3 percent.
The S&P is up 217.34, or 24.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 692.61, or 43.9 percent.
