Public Service Company of New Mexico plans to move a half-million pound transformer through Bernalillo and Rio Rancho early Tuesday.

The utility says it has secured all the proper road permits so the transformer can complete its 10,000-mile journey by sea and rail to a new electric switchyard northwest of Rio Rancho.

The transformer is being hauled on a truck that has 174 wheels on 24 axles and is the length of a football field.

PNM says it will take less time to move the transformer through Bernalillo and Rio Rancho because there won't be much traffic after midnight.

PNM says the $4 million transformer and new switchyard are part of a $41 million project to strengthen the electric grid that serves the fast-growing metropolitan area.
