Idaho Power Co. officials say the recent rash of subzero temperatures has led to a new record for power usage during the winter season.
The new record was set Dec. 10 when the utility supplied a winter record 2,527 megawatts of power to customers in Idaho and eastern Oregon.
Usage that day broke the mark set the previous day when customers used 2,468 megawatts, snapping the previous mark of 2,461 megawatts set in January 2008.
The cold weather record is still far fall below the high mark for summer use, when electricity demand for power for air conditioners and irrigation pumps escalates statewide. Idaho Power's peak summer demand was set June 30, 2008, when it supplied 3,214 megawatts.
