Xilinx Inc. on Tuesday raised its sales forecast for its fiscal third quarter as demand for its programmable chips improved.

The chip maker now expects sales to increase by 16 percent to 20 percent from the fiscal second quarter, instead of the 6 percent to 10 percent previously forecast. The new projection implies revenue of $481.3 million to $497.9 million for the December quarter.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters predict revenue of $450.6 million.

In the same quarter a year ago, Xilinx recorded third-quarter sales of $458.4 million.

Xilinx, based in San Jose, Calif, is scheduled to report earnings on Jan. 20.
