The top executive of General Electric has told a South Carolina audience that green technology can help the environment, create jobs and grow the economy.

Jeffrey Immelt was in Greenville Tuesday taking part in a summit on renewable energy.

He says the nation hasn't invested enough in energy technology in recent decades and that millions of green jobs will be created worldwide during the next five years.

The summit at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research was hosted by the university and GE Energy. GE employs 3,100 at its gas turbine plant in Greenville.

Last month, the university announced it was getting nearly $100 million to study wind energy. Officials say that could mean thousands of new jobs for the state.
