CINCINNATI (AP) _ The Kroger Co. is hurting from California's ailing economy and the overall bite of a dollar-by-dollar battle under way nationwide for recession-pinched households' grocery spending.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Brown-Forman Corp. reported a 3 percent rise in its second-quarter profit on the strength of brisk sales for its flagship Jack Daniel's whiskey lineup. It also raised its outlook for the year.

PLEASANTON, Calif. (AP) _ Contact lens and eye care product company Cooper Cos. Inc. said its fiscal fourth-quarter profit rose 2 percent on a mix of higher sales and lower tax expenses.

VAN NUYS, Calif. (AP) _ Cherokee Inc., which licenses its brand to shoe and clothing makers, said its profit fell 15 percent in the third quarter as sales were nearly flat and taxes rose.
