A Gannett Co. newspaper outside New York City says it is cutting 166 jobs by outsourcing its printing and mailing operations.

President and Publisher Michael J. Fisch says The Journal News will also try to sell its Harrison headquarters, where the paper and the Poughkeepsie Journal are now printed.

He said in a memo to staff Thursday that The Journal News would then lease back space or relocate. The paper covers three counties north of New York City.

Beginning with March 8 editions, printing and mailing will be done in Rockaway, N.J. Fisch said 166 full- and part-time employees will then lose their jobs.

He said the change would cut operating expenses and avert some capital spending.

The Journal News cut 50 news jobs and 20 advertising positions this summer.
