The Transportation Department announced two regulations Thursday that are designed to improve safety of natural gas and hazardous liquid pipeline operations.
One rule requires natural gas pipeline operators to adopt programs that require periodic inspections and testing of pipelines to look for potential problems.
Similar rules are in place for transmission pipelines.
The second rule establishes mandates for control room management operations. It also requires operators to account for National Transportation Safety Board recommendations on some systems used to manage pipeline operations and training for controllers.
The rules will be published Thursday and Friday in the Federal Register.
