A working group formed to study issues related to water discharge from coal-bed methane wells will hold its first meeting Wednesday in Gillette.

The Department of Environmental Quality formed the group to help resolve differences over how coal-bed methane water should be regulated in the Powder River Basin.

The 28-member working group is made up of ranchers, gas industry representatives, environmentalists, state regulators and others.

CBM wells have been pumping millions of gallons of groundwater to the surface. Some of that water is salty and can create problems for ranchers.
