A Chicago-area laboratory will get $8.8 million in federal stimulus cash to help find ways to make batteries more efficient for use in cars and other vehicles.

The Argonne National Laboratory will use the funds to construct three battery research and development facilities.

The money for the lab just southwest of Chicago is a slice of more than $104 million set aside by the U.S. Department of Energy for projects nationwide that aim to improve energy technology.

Federal officials say the projects underpin a White House push to put one million plug-in electric vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015.
