Stocks finished an erratic session mixed Tuesday as higher commodity prices lifted energy and materials shares. Major stock indexes had their third straight advance, reaching new 13-month highs, but there were more declining shares than advancers on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market. Stocks had zigzagged for much of the day on mixed news from retailers and industrial production.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 30.46, or 0.3 percent, to 10,437.42.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.02, or 0.1 percent, to 1,110.32.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 5.93, or 0.3 percent, to 2,203.78.
For the week:
The Dow is up 166.95, or 1.6 percent.
The S&P is up 16.84, or 1.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 35.90, or 1.7 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,661.03, or 18.9 percent.
The S&P is up 207.07, or 22.9 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 626.75, or 39.7 percent.
