PBS NewsHour co-anchor Gwen Ifill asked President Barack Obama why he didn't say Donald Trump's name in response to her questions on June 1 at an Elkhart, Indiana town hall. "He seems to do a good job mentioning his own name," the president said about the presumptive GOP nominee, "So, I figure I'll let him do his own advertising." "Do you consider, at all, that any of the support for him is backlash against you personally," Ifill follows up. "I think Trump is a more colorful character than many of the other Republican elected officials. But a lot of the story that he is telling is entirely consistent with what folks have been saying about me -- or the general story people tell about the economy for the past seven and a half... thirty years." "The basic story they tell is that the problems that the middle class, and working people face, are caused by a big bloated government that taxes the heck out of people and then gives that money to undeserving folks... whatever phrase they use. That businesses are being strangled by overregulation... and the fact of the matter is, when you look at it, the government as a proportion of out overall economy is actually smaller now than it was under Ronald Reagan."
