The Associated Press plans to promote regional editor David Scott to the role of National Political Editor, filling a position that had been left in the hands of an interim editor for more than four months, sources familiar with the AP's plans told POLITICO.

Scott, who currently serves as the Central Desk editor in Chicago, will be promoted to the chief politics spot on Tuesday, sources said. He is expected to oversee the AP's political coverage through the 2014 and 2016 elections.
