A partial government shutdown is looming at week’s end
House Speaker Mike Johnson is looking to schedule a vote tomorrow (TUE) on the 99-page bill, with a view to Democrats responsible for a potential partial government shutdown. He’ll again need total GOP support to thread the needle. Congress must act by Friday midnight. when the current continuing resolution expires. House Republicans unveiled a spending bill Saturday that would keep federal agencies funded through September 30th. Trump praised the bill, posting on his Truth Social platform that Republicans have to “remain UNITED — NO DISSENT —.”

Trump avoids stock market talk in social media frenzy
President Trump made no comments about the sinking stock market on Monday. As Wall Street continued its sell-off to begin the week, the president did not make any public appearances and no public statements about the stock market. However, he was active on social media — sharing several dozen favorable articles about himself and Republican praise for his leadership. Over the weekend, the president refused to rule out a possible recession, which further spooked investors.

House Republicans work to pass spending bill and avert government shutdown
The 99-page bill is certain to spark confrontation on Capitol Hill. It would provide a slight boost to defense programs while trimming nondefense programs below 2024 budget year levels. That approach is likely to be a nonstarter for most Democrats who have long insisted that defense and nondefense spending move in the same direction. Congress must act by midnight Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown. Speaker Mike Johnson is teeing up the bill for a vote on Tuesday despite the lack of buy-in from Democrats, essentially daring them to vote against it and risk a shutdown. He also is betting that Republicans can muscle the legislation through the House largely by themselves.

The state of Washington may vote on an abortion amendment
The state of Washington may vote on an abortion amendment
VERBATIM: Democrats have introduced a measure that would enshrine both abortion in the state constitution as well as a right to a sex-change operation. In order for the amendment to be placed before a vote of the people, it will have to pass both chambers of the Washington legislature by a two-thirds margin. Observers say it’s going to be a big lift for Democrats — they don’t currently have the votes and would have to convince several Republicans to vote with them. MH SRNN NEWS.
