Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 23 Years in Prison on Sexual Assault Charges

Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison via a New York court Wednesday morning, after much speculation about what Weinstein’s eventual sentence would be.

This ruling is a win for the multitude of women who accused Weinstein of various forms of sexual misconduct. In February, Weinstein was charged with two counts of sex crimes: first-degree sexual assault and third-degree rape; he was found not guilty on other misconduct charges.

After testimony from accusers, Weinstein’s lawyers requested a shorter sentence of only 5 years, arguing that the predicted sentence of 25 years would be a “life sentence” for the 67-year-old Hollywood executive. Weinstein's sentencing is a win for the MeToo movement, and accountability in sexual misconduct cases against powerful figures.

Weinstein still faces charges in a Los Angeles court.
