Is This Truth Less Evident?

It was 243 years ago today when the world first read the words of the Declaration of Independence. It was a stunning document, perhaps the most important in all of human history. But to too many Americans, they now ring hollow.

While we haven’t always lived up to them, the words in the Declaration hold a special, storied place in world history. None more so than the following: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

There is one political party that, as a policy, has always undercut those sentiments, to one degree or another. And they’re working harder today than perhaps ever before to bring about an end to those ideals, once and for all. Let’s take a look at one of them.

The idea that all people are created equal shouldn’t be controversial, especially from the party that claims to be fighting for just that. Yet Democrats have never fought for equal treatment of people.

First, they were the party of slavery. In order to create the union, northern abolitionists had to accept that moral abomination. To limit the influence of those slave-owing Democrats, northerners refused to allow them to count slaves as citizens for the purposes of representatives in the newly formed government a decade and a half later. The “3/5th Compromise” infuriated southern Democrats, but it was as far as the north was willing to go.

This blow against the institution of slavery has been spun by modern Democrats as evidence of the nation’s racist founding. Not mentioned is how they wanted slaves counted as citizens for more representation in the new government while denying them their freedom. Non-Democrats prevented that, thereby limiting the power of slave-owning Democrats.

After the Civil War, Democrats were defeated, along with their beloved slavery. Yet they remained as committed to the prospect of white supremacy as ever. They formed the Ku Klux Klan to terrorize black Americans and tighten their grip on power. “Progressive” Democratic President Woodrow Wilson re-segregated the federal government, and Jim Crow laws became the norm in Democratic strongholds.

Finally dismantled in the 1960s, the last vestiges of the Democratic Party’s racism were no more. Well, that’s not exactly true. The party shifted from direct oppressor to oppressive “savior.”

The whip and hood were traded for manipulation, but the objective was the same. If they couldn’t marginalize people, the Democrats had to control them.

In a feat of manipulation that would make Goebbels blush, Democrats recast themselves as protectors. And it worked.

Democrats managed a loyalty from black voters unlike any other in politics. They did it by claiming the side that defeated them to free slaves was the new oppressor, and Democrats were now the protectors. This manipulation wasn’t regional, it was nationwide. Generations later, cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Baltimore have been controlled, completely and exclusively, by Democrats for more than 60 years. If you’d set out to keep people economically depressed and dependent on government, you couldn’t do it any better.

They did it by convincing people that Republicans are somehow worse. That Democrats are protecting these populations from Republican oppression. Take a look at graduation and literacy in these cities and ask how anything could be worse?

It can’t, of course, but emotional manipulation is the most powerful force known to mankind. As I wrote in my book, people in an emotional state rarely act rationally. How often have you said or done something you’ve apologized for while calmly contemplative compared to angry or afraid? I bet the ratio isn’t even close.

Meanwhile, Asians and Indian Americans have, by far, the highest incomes in the country. How did that happen in this oppressive, racist, white supremacist country? For all the “help” and “protection” Democrats have been giving in exchange for unchallenged voting support, black median income in 2016 was $38,555 compared to $80,720 for Asians. Did we just forget to be racist to Asians? Did I miss a memo?

The fact is Democrats don’t care about making people economically independent; there’s no power in that for them. They are still selling the idea that the Civil Rights Act and Nixon’s “southern strategy” caused an exodus of racists from their party to Republicans. But the south didn’t become a Republican stronghold until 1994, long after both and due to the overreach of the Clinton administration on health care, guns, and taxes. And only 3 “Dixiecrats” switched parties after civil rights. The rest remained loyal Democrats in good standing, many of whom worked with Joe Biden, it seems.

It’s one of the greatest lies ever told, and ever sold. And it’s still selling well. It’s easier to believe the mysterious “other” is the reason for your problems than it is the people swearing to protect you might be doing so for selfish reasons.

Non-Democrats still hold those truths to be self-evident, because they are – all of them – but they will remain empty words to many if the people pushing historical fiction aren’t challenged. It’s been 243 years since we declared ourselves to be free people. On this anniversary, everyone should consider giving that freedom a shot.
