War on Terror

In President Bush's State of the Union address after 9/11, he said that this war was going to last a long time...many years. Much was made of the photo taken of him on board a cruise ship with a banner that read, "Mission Accomplished." Since when does a "mission accomplished" mean that the war has been won? Was he not allowed to congratulate his troops on a mission they'd performed well? Of course we must stay until we are victorious. Saddam Hussein kept the so-called "peace" in Irag by means of torture, imprisonment, rape and murder. Too much of the middle east is still held hostage by that kind of leadership. Anyone who really cares about human rights cannot possibly turn their backs on that kind suffering. And only the naive can believe that a policy of ignoring or appeasing the terrorists will keep them from forcing that kind of "leadership" on us. As President Bush says, we must shine the light of democracy in the darkest corners of the earth. In doing so, we'll be safeguarding our own future.

Good Sense

I agree with you in part. Yes the war will last a long time and I do support the effort and yes the mission was accomplished, and it was not a cruise ship it was an aircraft carrier. But it is was only that a mission. A "mission" is but one piece of a greater battle. So when he said the mission was accomplished yes Saddam had been removed from power. But democracy does not work in that pat of the world. Muslims are told in the Koran to "lie" to all those who are not Muslim and do not believe as they do. The problem is the different denominations of Muslims; and they do not get along. So there for that region must be ruled with fear until all can accept others and differing beliefs. Look back to when they told the pope to convert or be killed. when he made a single comment.
The major problem is the same problem we had in Vietnam. you can shoot here, here, and here, but not there, there, and there. We need to give a general order to the troops and then allow them to carry out there job.
Democracy works here because the Christian foundation of our country tells us to treat other with respect and kindness. Muslim teachings are the opposite, "kill the infidel." That is why there must be a change of Values and faith in the country before democracy can work. And yes I listed them in that order on purpose.
