A Giant Dies

wow

Powerful poetry in prose!
Awesome post, Skep...my forehead is hitting the floor.

just when we needed him

more than ever, to remind us, and educate the dumbed downed Americans, why Socialism is bad afterall. Some seem to be forgetting.

Emjayne and Dave

emjayne- dont wwreck the linoleum on my account. Thanx!

Dave- This is the problem of our times. A text message beats a three volume work of literature. People just don't read anymore. Socialism works as a text message, its the details that kill it.

A Great Loss...

This is the obit that should have appeared to mark the passing of giant. He was the gold standard of what a Nobel Laureate is meant to be. Perhaps his passing may renew some interest in his work and open it up to a new younger audience who unfortunately may find it all to tragically similar to what is going on around them.

Then again, "change" and "hope" are easier to text. Well done Skep.

I am absolutely impressed.

This is a fantastic obituary and I appreciate You writing this.

I will never forget being introduced to the works of Mr.
Solzhenitsyn via a professor of German at TCU. I was immediately enthralled and began to absorb everything he had published. "The Gulag Archipelago" and "One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich" had a profound effect on me and illuminated my appreciation for Life and Freedom.

I wanted to write an obit for him, but decided not to embarrass my self.

Well done, fanstastic job....Thank You!

Also,

I wouldn't say "A Giant Dies," but "A Giant Has Been Elevated."

Skep

I echo everyo Great job.ne else here, Fantastic post!.

Thank You Guys

This was something I really had my heart into. I just reread 'Gulag' this spring. It came out after I had changed from a radical to a 'conservative' of sorts (in the early 70s) but it had a huge influence on me. I liked that AS was so anti-social and didn't get co-opted into the literary scene. Conservatives are much better writers than liberals because they dont have to lie about what they really think.

Beltway Girl

I've always thought of Conrad as a nineteenth century writer. he is one of the greatest writers in English no matter what century.

awesome, Skep

fantastic obituary. thanks. I have much to read I see.

sorry to mention conrad, skep

i just really like him, and when i was reading your piece, i thought of him, in terms of his writings w/themes about good/evil in human nature.

never read "gulag." must admit, knew someone that had a copy, and noted how much it resembled an... encyclopedia volume! it's incredible you'd have read the whole thing through. thanks for sharing the info.

Beltway Girl

I've read it several times. Think of it as science fiction. Its about an evil world that exists in the shadows. Everyone knows that its there but just mentioning it to a close friend could result in your instant disappearance. That was the crazy side of it; you could be arrested for nothing. Some people were grabbed at random to make up arrest quotas. When the Soviets took over the Baltic States and rounded a quarter of their populations into their camps many of the people committed suicide because the brutality was beyond anything they had ever imagined. The mentality of the people running it was incredible. The amazing thing is that the book offers hope! Good can triumph over evil. Its also a warning about our own evil leftists. These morally empty people will do these things if they take power.

Hey, when I bow low i use a rug!!
Problem with this country...who will win? the liberals or the muslims?
Great Britain seems to be getting ahead of us, tho.

Emjayne

I've had a burst of optimism. I just put a post up that explains why.
