"Settled Science" Is an Oxymoron

Doc Stephens

Is it not a valid argument that, in opposition to those who claim the science settled or the debate over, there exists, naturally and spontaneously, a consensus of noted professionals?

I am no great scholar, but do have a more than average knowledge of the Scientific Method, pros and cons of peer review, Critical Thought, etc.

It would seem, in this case, consensus is for refuting the "settled science" not with claims of superior knowledge, but with the opposite, a claim that the science has deficient grounds on which to make any claims at all.

Consensus is, therefore, no more than a majority in agreement that they don't really know enough to propose any conclusions, much less profoundly proven ones. Or am I in err? It wouldn't be the first or final instance of such. I delight in being shown the error of my own conclusions, they being learning opportunities.

I do agree with your premises, completely.

After my initial post, I became engrossed with the total of your posts.

You are what my father would have considered as a wise man, that being a person who has the innate ability to use his knowledge. He taught me according to how he had learned: when you realize how little you know with respect to how much there is to learn, your education begins. He taught me that a mistake is, usually, an opportunity to learn a lesson. Only repeated mistakes are reason for regret, in that you are not learning the lesson that prevents the mistake.

He also taught me that science, while some claim otherwise, is a Godly endeavor and that any scientist who is honest with himself will see God's purpose in science. God, according to Dad, has a purpose, not a plan.

Dad also taught me to listen and hear what a man was trying to impart, not just hear words. Give any man benefit of doubt until he proves himself unworthy of such.

It seems that good men of goodwill toward others are very similar in their realization of the world and those in it. Life is a continuous prayer, concern for others the measure of a man's life, God is in all things if you care to see, honesty is the only policy, etc. My dad, and you, sir, are the Solomons of the world. Thank God for you and your God given wisdom.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your posts.
