What Do You Want from Your National Government?

I agree, but...

I agree that fiscal discipline is paramount if the US is to regain its strength. I just don't believe either McCain or Obama will really cut spending. McCain has a better chance of doing so, but even in his acceptance speech he talked about growing the unemployment handouts for people whose jobs have left and won't come back. From where will he get the money and can he or anyone truly cut the government payroll. As one of my political science professors said, "Civil Service is welfare for people who work." They won't let their jobs disappear even if their positions do.

McCain has a better chance of doing so

Massive spending cuts from the Pork Barrel is a good start. The Alternative is disaster, and voting someone with no chance or staying home gives you that.

Our Only Choices

We still have to make a choice even though this election year we only have 2 candidates and 2 parties to choose from. I agree that McCain has the best chance of limiting or reducing Federal spending. Freeing up tax dollars could be gained by controlling "earmarks" and "pork barrel" spending. As far as size of government, government can be downsized by two means. Mandate systematic reduction in department personnel, not drastic but a few % per year and second, do not hire replacements for retirees. Both have been employeed in the past and worked to reduce government size. There are other, more drastic opportunities. But be mindful of congressional races as well and don't forget local representatives since they all tax us one way or another.
