The Love Of A Dog

Awwww!
I love to hear about sweet and wonderful dogs like yours must be. Yeah, dogs can be so smart and giving. They're smarter than we give them credit for. And selfless in ways we can learn from. I love the story from a few months back about the dog who saved his owner's life by doing the Heimlich!
I had a cat for years when I lived in the big city and couldn't devote much time to a pet, but now that we're in the 'burbs, we plan on getting a dog in a year, maybe.
Cats can be smart, too, but usually just to know who is allergic so they can go rub against them.

I love dogs. I have a red heeler that is wonderful. Of course she also thinks she can get away with everything..Razor you're gonna laugh at this. Several months back Reno (my dog) had what I thought was a mild stroke. She seemed alright just a little gimpy in the rear leg. She could walk and do everything she did before but she couldn't get up the front steps. I had to pick her up and carry her, no small feat as she's heavy. Now I find out that she can not only climb them but run up them. Guess she thought I needed to get more exercise.

Oh that's right. I had forgotten about that dog who did the Heimlich. That was just amazing. Yes, dogs are very smart and just think of all the uses for dogs.
I was watching the dog show last night on animal planet and am always so interested to hear again and again the different reasons for each breed and the work that each dog does.

I cracked up over your story about having to carry your dog only to find out he can do it himself. Too funny and smart on the dog's part. LOL
My neighbor has a skipperke and he pretends he can't get up when he gets mad. He rolls over on his back and lies there as dead weight. My neighbor picks him up and babies him which just encourages it.
Usually he will do this trick if she pays attention to another dog. He gets so utterly jealous.

Pep,
You're killing me here. My Dukesie dog was a shepherd/huskie mix that many people asked to buy from me because she was so beautiful. No go, of course.
My dog was so gentle that I swear she wouldn't even bite her food; but there were 2 times that she thought my daughter and I were threatened and, oh my gawd you couldn't believe her. I'm tearing up thinking about it and that was 20 years ago.
I had my good dog for 10 years and I haven't been able to replace her, nor have I wanted to.
Geez, Pep...can't we talk about nuclear devastation instead?
I'd say to my dog, "What's on top of a house?" and she'd say "Woooooooooooof..."
Of course she was correct.

That does sound like a beauty of a dog with two of my favorite breeds besides mine of course.
I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset people with the dog story. I thought I was writing something sweet to get away from all the doom and gloom and it looks like I presented sadness anyway.
Woooooof, good answer. LOL

Excellent blog and glad you learned how to place pictures. Helps to enhance stories like yours. Dakota sound like a great little dog. I loved the stories about him.
I agree whole heartily with your last paragraph. In fact I think you know I trust my animals far more than humans.
Super job Pep!

I got a little choked up. That was a great article! I can't understand those that aren't "dog people", or cultures that don't value dogs as companions. Your words invited me to relive some of the memories of dogs that God has blessed me with during my life. Here's a little poem I ran across that I think speaks to your post;
A Dog's Soul
Every dog must have a soul, somewhere deep inside
Where all his hurts and grievances are buried with his pride.
Where he decides the good and bad, the wrong way from the right,
And where his judgement carefully is hidden from our sight.
A dog must have a secret place, where every thought abides,
A sort of close acquaintance that he trusts in and confides.
And when accused unjustly for himself, He cannot speak,
Rebuked, He finds within his soul, the comfort he must seek.
He'll love, tho' he is unloved, and he'll serve tho' badly used,
And one kind word will wipe away the times when he's abused.
Altho' his heart may break in two, his love will still be whole,
Because God gave to every dog an understanding Soul!

Thanks so much for stopping by and liking my dog story.
Your poem about broke my heart. I cannot tolerate anyone abusing a dog. And, the poem speaks volumes about their ability to forgive and love again even though they may have been treated so badly by some nasty human who is not worth a dog's life.
My neighbor rescued a skipperke who was badly abused by its' owners. The poor little thing was scared to death at first. But, she gave that dog every ounce of love in her body and he now believes he died and went to heaven.
This skipperke is one of the sweetest little dogs I have ever seen and I cannot imagine for one moment how anyone could ever have abused him. Every time my neighbor and I think of it, tears come to our eyes. We both would like to perform some justice on his previous owners. Grrrr.

I am sorry I am replying to you so late, but have had so many interruptions and got discombobulated. Then my post to you disappeared. Trying again.
Thanks so much for the compliments. I know we both love dogs and trust them more than humans. It's easy to see why as humans are never as loyal and trusting as a dog is.

I love cats too. In fact I had a cat, Tosca, who just died recently. Dakota missed his little friend for quite some time. In fact, I'm not sure he is completely over it as they were best buddies and usually together.

RB, Did you ever think that maybe Reno was hinting that maybe those steps are a bit rickety and in need of a fix? You are lucky I didn't think to try that method when I was there!
My Pegasus is a keeshond who is 100% heart.I found him limping around the neighborhood after having been throw out of a car and abandoned. I had a Westy at the time who was also found but she was small enough to fit in my coat pocket then. Ragamuffin and Peg got along just fine as long as he obeyed her. When I had to have her put down a couple of years ago he cried real tears right along with me.I still miss her so much it hurts and Peg always knows when I'm thinking of her and comes over for a cuddle.
Psalm 23 Thank you for that poem. I'm going to read it to Peg tonight, even if I can't get the lump out of my throat.

I have an 11 year old Brussels griffon who suffers from arthritis and kidney stones. He's slowed down a lot compared to his youth, but he loves loves LOVES me! I spend 5 minutes, probably, every day full of dread for the moment when we will lose him.
They are wonderful little gifts from GOD.

Oh, thanks for dropping by.
I really feel for you about your dog. I lost my cat not too long ago. I don't even want to think how awful it would be to lose Dakota.
I know he loves you. Poor little guy with all those problems. It breaks my heart.
