Comment on: My Thoughts on Guns

Miscellaneous Thoughts on Firearms

I thank God

I thank God for citizens like yourself. It comforts me to know that there are responsible, alert Americans carrying weapons. If My children and I are out and about around town, people like yourself would rise up if danger should arise.
I have had my eyes opened to the freedoms of keeping and bearing arms. Thank you for your lessons on safety, and for making the points about rather not having to use your firearms, unless necessary.
My family and I have recently become firearm owners.

Thank you for your kind comments. Believe it or not I think I am a more responsible person as a result of being a gun owner. Carrying a gun all the time tends to make some people more aware of their responsibilities. I am thankful that there are more people like you who are also becoming responsible gun owners.

On Target!

I'm dead on target with 95% of what you post (the other 5% we are pretty darn close on). Great blogging. One thing you haven't discussed in your post is stance. As a former competetive shooter and a shooting instructor I find it is the most overlooked discipline in shooting. Even as I'm sure you know from being in law enforcement, the police academies do from my expierience a poor job of training the stance. I've taught many cops how to shoot and just retraining them on stance tightened up their groups by 80%. IMHO the modifide Weaver is the best allaround stance for practicle shooting. It has manny pluses and isn't difficult to learn. I found these videos on the web which are pretty darn good. Maybe this will help some of your blog readers.

I appreciate you comments. Were the 5% about stance? I definitely agree with your statements on stance. I have used the modified Weaver stance since the '70's. I also agree with you about LE firearms training. I have watched a number of cops shoot and I have seen many dash cam videos showing cops shooting and any/all training goes out the window. Probably because they don't practice enough. I believe that the more you practice, the less goes out the window. I once knew a treasury agent who competed in matches because his agency didn't provide enough training. USPSA matches offer an opportunity to shoot with more stress than some departments provide (think about the CHP/Newhall shootings). Many cops in my department hated having to go to the range and qualify semi-annually. can you believe that? Thanks again for your comments.

No, acyually the only thing I didn't totaly agree with you on was the car gun. I think a low maintaence Semi like a Glock a better choice then a wheel gun. Guns in gloveboxes get neglected. I was instructing someone a few years ago and we started talking about his car gun, a nickel 3" S&W. I asked if he was keeping it in a manner that was readily useable. He took me to his car to demonstrate. He reached into his glovebox, shuffle through papers and napkins, pulled the Smithy out and de-holstered it. And it rained coins, paperclips, dust bunnies and other debris that had found it's way into the holster. I looked at the mess and thought to myself "would I trust that to shoot?" Consequently anyone that ask what they should carry in their car, that's my sugestion. If they don't have to ask, then they probably know enough that they would properly care for the weapon anyway. In other words, someone like you, carry what you like.

I do appreciate your comments. It is nice to see that someone is reading my ranting. :) I wish there was a hit counter.

I decided on the Smith for several reasons for my car gun. I don't leave the gun in the car and I shoot and clean it regularly. I also keep it on the nightstand with the Colt and I have a 12 ga for home use as well.

One of the reasons I decided to use the Smith as my car gun was because it is a quick, point and shoot gun; double action and no safeties involved. Even tho it is a 2 1/2" barrel, it looks menacing enough. It has the appearance of "I mean business."

I also carry a Colt Officers Model in the car as well.
