Beautifully Written
I was also a "liberal" in college. And as a newlywed at age 24, I dragged my new husband and a group of friends down to the NOW Pro abortion rally in DC--my greatest embarrassment now.
But, funny, I was not registered as a Democrat, but as an independent. When I registered in college, I reasoned that none of this would have REAL meaning to me until I had a real job, paid real taxes, supported myself, etc.
So, I guess I had at least enough smarts to know that I was going to have to grow up soon. :)

I Respectfully Disagree
Obama may have cashed in on the ideals of the Aquarians, but he, like Carter, is a demagogue. My favorite H.L. Menken saying goes something like this (paraphrasing): "A Demagogue is one who espouses policies he does not believe to men he knows to be idiots."
Obama is an opportunist. He artfully ran on a platform with almost no planks. He offered "Change," as if all elections aren't about change. He offered to cut the income taxes of 95 percent of the working population, when 40 percent of that same population don't pay any income taxes. He pledged to reduce the capital gains taxes of small businesses, which don't generally pay capital gains taxes. He promised to provide affordable health care to all comers with no increase in cost or diminution of services. This clearly cannot be done in a government controlled context.
And of course, he offers up the opportunity for guilty liberals to demonstrate that they are not racists by electing a man of color, even if he was raised in a Caucasian household.
And he picked a time in the election cycle that Charles Krauthammer described as one where the Italian Communist party could win.
The real picture of Obama, to those who were listening, is one of a Chicago political operative. He was a player in the community that elected him. He appeared in all the right places with all the right people to get the votes of that community, and out-doing Clinton, lied through his teeth and denied the obvious when it became necessary, knowing that because it was his time he would not be held accountable for prior misdeeds.
The GOP is wearing the hair shirt and ashes because it lost an election it could not win. Their candidate was the lowest common denominator, and his principles for the most part were fuzzy at best. The GOP needs to let go of the loss and regroup in time for the next election.
PS: A few paragraph breaks would make for much easier reading.

Star Parker Article Jan 19
Read your comments in Parker's thread, bbdoc (ok to shorten your moniker?).
I undertook an examination of Lincoln some years back. Trust me when I say I was in shock when I discovered some hard truths about that WHOLE period of history.
I am not historian and don't claim to be, but my reseach reflects the conclusion you shared in Parker's article.
I hope you put up an expanded version of your comments as a post. While it will ruffle quite a few feathers, the truth is nothing to run from and ultimately cannot hurt.
