You are right that the Vikings used to grow vegetables on Greenland about 1200 years ago, during an unusually warm period of climatological history. They all starved to death about a 1,000 years ago when the weather killed their crops and ice prevented them from returning to Scandanavia. It's called "Greenland" because Leif Erickson was speculating in land and needed lots of people to move to his new colony.

So it wasn't a few hundred years ago, but it was A LOT warmer there within recorded history and we should be keeping that in mind.
