Israel and U.S. Responsibility

Multiple reasons

One, the United States owes the people of Israel for the Holocaust. Men like my father, who repented of his stance after he learned the truth, prevented the US from entering WWII when they might have spared millions of Jewish lives. That's on the heads of the Greatest Generation. How much money is enough to repay all the suffering we allowed to happen? I don't think we can estimate.

Two, having acknowledged that, if we allow Iran, et al, to wipe Israel off the map, are we not just as guilty as the Greatest Generation was for what they didn't do when they knew they should?

Three, Israel is the only functionally stable democracy in the Middle East and the only potential base of operations for us if we ever have to go to war against Saudi Arabia, etc. Keeping that ability is vitally important if we're to have any hope of not being marginalized by having our oil supply strangled. Remember, long-ranged missiles are almost always nuclear. If we want to maintain the ability to use the oil supply, we have to maintain the ability to use tactical weapons, which means shorter ranges -- i.e., Israel.

I would also state that most Christians in the United States do realize that Israel is the historic heir to God's covenantal relationship with human kind. I don't think fundamentalist CHrisitans have the sort of political power that would allow control of US foreign policy to that degree. American Jews have a lot of power, but they still must work with Christians of many stripes in order to accomplish their goals for Israel. I believe it's more of an ecumenical effort.

Yes

I agree with aurorawatcher. There are a lot of good reasons to support Israel that have nothing to do with a bunch of Revelations clingers. Israel is a great country with great people who are one of our most loyal allies and friends.

Trying to determine policy based on the Bible is illegal and when pretaining to foreign policy idiotic but their are many solid reasons to continue on our path of friendship with the Jewish state.
