America's Youth Going Down the Drain?

Law of Unintended Consequences

Kelley, I love your piece. Maybe I'll get to comment more later. Conservatives talk a lot about the "law of unintended consequences," and the driving up of the price of milk (and all milk-based products!) is one of said consequences.

Teens

Thanks for this post, now I'm either 1) moving to the mountains to raise my family and live off the land or 2) homeschooling my kids.

I'll probably go with #2. While living off the land might seem like a cool adventure, getting mauled by a bear is a lot less likely just staying put in Illinois. ;)

A Different World

Washington, D.C. is a different world. The schools there include some of the worst in the nation. The situation you describe may well be true there, but it is not true of most of America, no matter what some conservative columnists would have us believe. I've taught on the east coast and now in the midwest. In neither place did I ever have to put up with the behavior described here.

It is also worth noting that this call in show would not be interesting if it didn't have horror stories. This sort of view leads people to give up on public school rather than try to solve the problems in them.
