The left wants the Catholic church to conform to their standard. Your quote from the article expresses it well, "They wish us to go away if we will not relent and accept as a part of our religion their liberal agenda and anti-life secular belief system."
My favorite story is when Nancy Pelosi flew to Rome to straighten out the pope regarding abortion and birth control. To avoid Pelosi from framing the meeting the Vatican issued an outline almost before the meeting concluded. Good move, Pelosi would have framed the meeting in such a way as to force the Pope to go on defense.
If the Catholic church bowed to the repeated calls for 'modernization' over the centuries there would not be a Catholic church.

Notice how well becoming a modern, inclusive church worked out for the Episcopalians.
