The Cowardice of the American Press

I loved your post, but I nearly wept reading your bio. You see, I was adopted at birth in 1960. Had I been conceived in 1970, I might have been dispensed with in a more convenient manner.

My mother and I had a major falling out when I was a teenager. I was asked to live elsewhere. 10 years later, she had a stroke and now requires constant care. I am trying as best as I can to let her know that nothing is as important to me than the love and kindness she gave me by adopting me.

She raised me in an observant Catholic home. In fact Catholic Charities facilitated the adoption. I am forever in her and their debt.
Mom has moved away from her faith and I have come back. I try to rekindle in her what she kindled in me.

You have hit the nail on the head about media cowardice. They can rail against the US because they are completely safe. Even when they print fabrications. But when the opportunity arises to do their duty, they fold like deck chairs.

In a culture that views boyhood as an illness and manhood as a crime your views are gratefully received, at least by me.

Happy Mother's Day

Ken,
Thank you for your lovely comments...and, you have the distinction of being my very first comment on my very first published blog!

I feel very strongly about adoption - and Christian's role in it. We - they - are exhorted to take care of the orphans and widows. I find it shameful that people who do not believe in abortion do not open their hearts and homes to the children resulting from unwanted pregnancies and/or bad parents who should never have had children to begin with. All of my children were special needs kids which means they were not infants, sibling groups or had some behavior problems. We fostered also, and at various times, I had a dozen kids or more. It was difficult, but I wouldn't trade what I did for a second.

I'm so glad you were adopted, but sad that things got difficult enough that you had to leave. It's commendable that you are doing what you can for her now, in her time of need.

Your statement was eloquent, "In a culture that views boyhood as an illness and manhood as a crime..." The issue of how childhood is now often looked at, and dealt with, is also something close to my heart. And, which, no doubt, I will address at some point. At this point, children with normal energy and a lack of attentiveness that has always been considered a natural process of growing up are often medicated and treated as though they have problems not found in the normal course of growing up. But, this is an issue for another post...*smile*

Again, thanks so much for your comments. Your post made my night.
