It doesn't surprise me that Powell jumped ship and endorsed the Imposter Obama...this is what comes of affirmative action...Powell was against the first GULF war,in favour of sanctions...that should have been the end of his career!
It didn't look too good for George Washington at Valley Forge and "old Abe" wasn't too optimistic in "62"...the future was bleak for Winston Churchill in the summer of 1940 and FDR was less than thrilled in the spring of "42"...but they all had faith in PROVIDENCE and the forces of light...fear not, obama will trip...the seductive serpent WILL BE CRUSHED!!!

Skep! Your essay is most profound and powerful. You wrote the truth and the history backs up each word. I have been making "light" of Powell`s endorsement of O on other blogs such as he`s 71, kinda old, senility, erratic behavior, he`s black, too. But you have brought forward and presented exactly who the man, Colin Powell, is and the price America has paid because of him. Thank you!

What would we expect?
A self-described affirmative action General who rose to be the first CJCS with no combat experience. War is just something he read about in a book. Timid is not a fine quality in a General.
The Powell Doctrine always reminds me of the rabbit scene in Monty Python. "Run Away!", Run Away!", "Run Away!"
In typical Powell fashion he is picking sides when he thinks it's over.
When I was in the service, NCO's and Officer's got fitness reports. There was a question in the reviewing Officer section that asked, "Would you be willing to serve in combat with this man?" A "No" on that question signaled the end of your career.
Want to take a shot at what I'd give Powell?

I thought Powell served in combat in Vietnam. I have to confess that I only know of him since he rose as cap's protege. His fitness to command can only be judged by his actions taken when he was in command. Those speak for themselves. He wrote the book on taking timid half-measures which leave your enemy able to regroup and retaliate. Saddam is an example.

Wow, great essay
Your section on Beirut and what our failure there taught the Arab terrorists is most illuminating. Reagan tried to redeem his mistake by standing strong to Libya but the damage was done in Beirut. I served in the Navy as an Arab linguist from 96-02, and my boss for the first 2 years was a civilian contractor who had been a marine in the barracks in Beirut. He has a reconstructed knee, permanent eye damage, and was medically discharged from the military as a result. He went to learn Arabic using the GI bill after recovery, and got a DOD job, knowing that was our next serious threat. He was always bitter at Reagan (who was Commander in Chief, after all) for pulling out and not making Hezballah pay for that attack. We all wondered after the USS Cole and the African Embassies what was wrong with our leadership when they wouldn't respond to acts of war. This is a great essay that points out some of Powells responsibility for those mistakes.

This came as no surprise to me. I am not sure what all the excitement was leading up to it. Actually if you wanted to surprise people he should have said, "Too bad George W. Bush can't run again."
Other than that it is his choice. What I find to be out of line is the comments he made about Governor Palin and her lack of experience...blah...blah. Where is Obama's experience? Oh right, no one can find it!

So true. Heck we know more about Gov Palin's son Trig than we know about Obama.
If I hear one more time from Obama, his wife, the MSM and all other Obama heads that we know him and that he has been vetted, enlighten me. When did this happen? Did I miss the memo?
Can you believe Obama's voice pieces were saying John McCain should have vetted him? WTH?

I wish it was just Powell. The Powell Doctrine is what you get from an education in the liberal arts. The concepts of national interest and victory are completely absent from that world. They want to seem to be reasonable at all times. holding the moral high ground is an obsession. Your friend paid a high price for that obsession. So have the thousands of people that Hezbollah has murdered in the meantime. What fools they are...and if the polls are right they'll be in charge soon with no effective opposition restraining them.

The Plame Affair is a shameful disgrace. It points out what is going to happen when these guys seize power on Jan 30, 1933...er, um, I mean Jan 20, 2009. Counterrevolutionaries like us better watch out.

I could not believe the way the media was attacking this guy. Good grief. He is a plumber trying to make a living and Obama and Biden are making snide remarks.
That vetting comment was so lame. I was laughing to hard. How ridiculous was that?

Thanks for the "Heads Up" on Powell
I thought he had some combat experience like you, until Sgt Relic said no.
I checked, he doesn't.
Personally I had always believed that Burnside was the worst general in American history (i.e., the disastrous Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of the Crater). He was always able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
I stand corrected. Colin Powell just went ahead of Burnside. (Burnside at least was a some what brave man who had "smelled" gunpowder. Although he was an idiot, he had served in combat.)

great article, Skep
Powell's endorsement was incoherent. He gave emotional "reasons" why he was for Obama. There is no way that he honestly thinks Obama and Obama's uncle, Joe Biden, would do better than McCain. It amounted to one black guy voting for another black guy. Powell could have easily said, "I'm in my 60's now and want to live my remaining years in peace and accolades. If I don't endorse Obama, Essence Magazine, Ebony, Jet, the NYT and others will hound me to my grave. Thank you."
p.s. - do y'all think the MSM would make a big deal of it if Powell HAD gone for Mac?

Decided he liked Obama based on the way McCain "has been running his campaign"? What? This guy is not fooling all of us, no matter how hard the Enemedia covers for him. Yes, the perfect Democrat for the Military. This was very well done Skep as usual.

Burnside didn't institute a horrible strategic doctrine that crippled his country for decades. He at least warned Lincoln that he wasn't fit for command.

I don't see anything wrong with black people feeling pride and voting for Obama because he shows that they can aspire to anything. Its disingenuos of course because their aspirations will be much narrower under a socialist system but its very understandable. Powell knows better. His thin justifications show that he does.

I think it has. Aren't these the people that Obama/Biden are fighting for? Of course just in their mind.
When I was in the bank the other day and CNN was on the giant screens (I wonder how much of bank fees are paying for those?), Obama was at some rally. And the guy behind me was chuckling. He then said, "I am Jack the A/C guy and you are not taking my money!" I thought that was pretty good.
And then they went onto a story about how many banks may still collapse, etc. Nice story for a bank. And then all of the screens went red. Nice to be in a bank and hear about banks collapsing.

Hey better than the week before when a woman was freaking out that the bank was going to go down while at the teller window. Hey relax, it is Bank of America. In 6-9 months when the credit card debt catches up and all of the lawsuits from Country Wide are being paid out, who knows the bank of opportunity may have issues. No worries, we can just have another 9000000 gazillion dollar bailout and call it a day!
Happy Halloween!

Nice to see someone remembers things and can put them down like you do.
One thing also bothers me is when the MSM call Powell a Republican and how he now supports Obama, he's no more a real Republican than Chris "tingle leg" Matthews. Powell is a big time RINO.

I remembered something else about Powell and added it to this post about an hour ago. When some officers in the Venezuelan miltary staged a coup and arrested hugo Chavez in 2001, Powell immediately demanded his release as the legally elected ruler. What a great advance for democracy that was.
