The EC is the only thing protecting us from mob rule. If the majority of us are have nots, and work nots, and think nots, the EC keeps civilization intact. We must be protected from the Great Dumbed Down Moderate Middle. Good post.

The EC is a good thing. Look at the way other countries run their show, the grass isn't always greener elsewhere. Stay white.

somewhere in the middle...anti-Bush
Although there is a lot that the average American may not know in relation to how the government operates, or even an underlying theme to a seemingly obvious proposal...there is also a lot that our governmental officials arent providing us with in terms of details of these proposals. So the electoral college may be protecting us in certain retrospects but it could also be damaging...especially when we think of how the electoral college was partially responsible for appointing our most recent Bush wacker.

The EC is no protection
The current Electoral College does not exercise independent judgment as to who would be the best President and offers absolutely no protection against "the possibility that the majority will vote for the wrong person." There have been 22,000 electoral votes cast since presidential elections became competitive (in 1796), and only 10 have been cast for someone other than the candidate nominated by the elector's own political party. The electors are dedicated party activists who meet for about 15 minutes in mid-December to cast their totally predictable votes in accordance with their pre-announced pledges, and collect their $10 honorarium.
