I'm Not Suprised

that it was hugely unpopular! Brits are taxed enough as it is, I understand. At least we still have free TV! Although they tax us aplenty too.

Squiddy

Read it again. It's far worse than you think.

It's the subversion of the Rule of Law. In order to collect this tax, the government has to mandate that a tracking device is put into every car.

This is to make a VARIABLE price mechanism work.

e.g. Fred Street costs 5p to drive down, but Joe Street costs 50p to drive down.

Everyone will therefore drive down Fred Street, and the businesses on Joe Street will suffer.

This is dictatorship by the back door.

Squiddy

Nice to hear from you in any case. I have been on holiday, and I haven't had anything to blog about recently.

This is being proposed here in Cali, too. We already have a few roads that were built specifically as toll roads, and with the equipment to read a pass stuck in the windshield and charge your credit card.

Now the state political hacks are talking about expanding the program to existing freeways ---- for which we ALREADY PAID TO BE BUILT WITH OUR TAXES -- and allow access to the Diamond Lanes (car pool lanes) with variable fees charged based on traffic and time of day.

VARIABLE FEES? Can you think of anything that lends itself more to social engineering?

It's horrifying isn't it?

This is "liberalism" at its worse - it's the Road to Serfdom as Hayek warned.

Greg

"Road to Serfdom"

Quite literally, in this case.

Plus, you have to pay a fee to use it. Insult added to injury.

this from the country

that makes you buy a license for your TV. Amazing.

Greg

I just posted a new essay, discussing McLiberal's latest.... announcement.

Blimey!
