Can a person be an atheist and a Conserv

Lately I have been pondering this. Can a person be an atheist and a Conservative? Socially, probably not. . . But fiscally? I suspect that there are very few if any Conservative Atheists. If so, then this may suggest something deeper at play here, a rejection not just of theism, but of modernity. Atheisism seems to be a reaction to Western Civilization in much the same way that radical islam is.

Can One Be An Athiest & A Conservative!

YES!!!

My father is a true conservative; He served in Vietnam as a Captain in the Combat Engineers. He worked hard every day, was successful in life as a result of his work ethic, talent, and brains. He's lived his life by the values born out
of the Revolutionary War slogan "Don't Tread On Me!"

The idea that is encompassed in that slogan is the idea from which belief in the separation of the church and state came from. It's a proudly CONSERVATIVE IDEA!!!

Don't tread on Me means you don't force your beliefs, your religion, your life onto me, and U won't force mine on you in return.

I say this about my dad because he's not only a conservative; he's also an Athiest!!!

Athiest and Conservative?

Hey- Great insight in your comparison of Atheism in Western Civilization to radical Islam. Most people dismiss any comparison of the two by noting that no sub culture in Western Civilization- be they Atheists, Christian fundamentalists, or right wing hawks- launch suicide bombing attacks against innocent women and children.

But that quick, defensive refusal is kind of a rejection itself, and what you said fits perfectly; It may well be a rejection of theism & modernity on the part of many western conservatives.

But why, I wonder. What are they so scared of?

Anyway, frikkin' good stuff- Thanks for aending it-
