What to do....
I am very close to giving up. I mean, I live in a rural area, own a gun, work from home....
I can hunt for food, live close enough to a fresh water lake to drink, and am good with my hands.
Let them take the country into oblivion.
If we go into bankruptcy as a nation, the effect will hit the city dwellers hardest, you know, the ones that are used to "Getting a check". I should be ok, as long as I'm able to defend my property until the American People wake up.

It can't be as bleak as it looks!
But it looks dismal from a political view and my guess is that it will need to get worse before the people do anything about it.
Yes we do have a choice of;
Training on the job during wartime, an Affirmative Action woman or black President or a POW who received special favors and has fractured his own party with discord.
None of the above have enough executive experience to manage a lemonade stand!
All three are PC sissies!
None could unite America, restore our prestiege and economy and lead us to victory over Radical Islam.
Just how much can you raise taxes before Government energizes the "Barter System"?
There are many things wrong with America today.
None of the candidates even look in the direction of our real problems.

Like garryb and
Gunny,if it comes down to survival I'm quite capable. I have several rifles and shotguns that I can use to get food or defend the family. I also live in a very rural area of Kentucky and am surrounded by the same type of people.
But to answer your question's "what happened and what can we do about it."
In my opinion, the biggest cause, (not all, but the biggest)is the Liberals and their constant push for Socialism. They have taken over the Democratic party, turned our schools into indoctrination centers and force their un-Constitutional laws through Liberal courts.
What to do about it? Revolution! Eradicate the disease of Liberalism. Undo all the damage they've done.

Drugs
No, I do not agree that legalizing drugs is the answer to all the difficulties you cite. I do not believe that surrender is ever the answer.
What is your answer to my proposition that an $8,000 per day cocaine habit is out of the reach of the average 19-22 year old, and the only answers to *who is going to pay for his habit?* are (1) the taxpayers; (2) the insurance companies (see item 1); or (3) the criminal justice system (see item 1)?
People who think legalizing drugs will solve all the problems -- and we have not even mentioned the fifteen year old driving 150 mph on the wrong side of the highway because his cocaine buzz makes him believe he is Iron Man -- never, ever, EVER answer the question AT WHOSE EXPENSE?
Got an answer?

The costs
I again speak with the authority of ignorance(never stopped our legislators), but I have been told that most of these drugs can be produced for peanuts. Cocaine could cost on a par with asprin. I don't think $ 8,000.00 would figure into it. In order to qualify for the 'scrip an addict would agree with with the medical authority what his consumption would be. He would guard it against theft with his life.
I firmly believe that that the most important link in this whole chain is the retailer, the pusher. Get rid of him and 80% of the problems associated with current drug use are soon solved. No more "Psst kid! you wanta feel good? try some of this, it's free." Far fewer new addicts.
The surrender you refer to is a realization that the current "plan" is worthless. do you agree?

Question: How did we get here?
I think that the Founders wrote a good plan for a long-lived Republic, but the avarice and lust for power of officeholders derailed the well-thought plans.
From the beginning, there was a divide between the Federalists and anti-Federalists, due to some vagueness in the Constitution, which led to the SCOTUS creating Federal powers out of the general welfare clause, which the Founders had not anticipated.
Second was the 16th and 17th Amendments, which came in a period of general democratization (in contrast to republicanism) around the world - the spread of Marxist and proletarian ideas, in other words, mob rule, and rob the rich to feed the poor.
Third was the socialist legislation of FDR, which laid the groundwork for the nanny state and an intellectual elite that sees itself as wiser than the average person, and sets themselves up as managers of society.
Through their well-crafted media presentations (propaganda), the well-meaning and trusting Joe on the street is gulled into thinking that what the MSM says is the gospel truth.

I guess we didn't keep it.

Question: What can we do about it?
We can reverse the decisions and legislation that has been made in the last two hundred years:
Force the SCOTUS, somehow, to disregard precedents in cases decided on the general welfare clause;
Repeal the 16th and 17th Amendments;
Repeal all socialist legislation by voting for strongly conservative and libertarian Representatives and Senators;
Force all MSM out of business so that Joe on the street is no longer fed that pablum any more.
All that sounds fine on paper, but I don't really think it is practicable.
