Since the time of Mondale, the percentage of Americans who actually pay any taxes has declined. Not only do a larger number get refunds of part of what is withheld, but a grater percentage get a full refund.

So, for a greater number,t he promise to raise taxes means "I will raise taxes on someone else for your benefit."

In addition, the number getting more out of the state than they pay in has risen, so for many the idea of higher taxes is still a net gain for them.

It is a dangerous dynamic, one which will eventually destroy our economy and bankrupt our nation, but it is not insane. For many supporting high taxes makes financial sense.
