Well said!
Excellent, excellent piece.
There's a wonderful example of idiot-benevolence under discussion right now. There's a lot of talk about government involvement in the mortgage crash taking place, stepping in and bailing out foolish homeowners who overextended, and lenders who made bad loans.
Of course, this is lunacy. Why should fools be made whole, and particularly at the expense of people who might benefit from their foolishness: prospective buyers of properties that may now sell less expensively, allowing more prudent buyers to make a profit, or even just afford a home that they couldn't get previously?
For every knucklehead who makes bonehead decisions, there's someone else who may legitimately profit from that error. Where does the government get the right to step in and interfere with that free-market process?

Doc seems to have morphed into a darn good cartoonist as well, so I recommend his site (http://drsteech.townhall.com/) to all!

BrianR, I am reminded of the ..
.. the scene in Blazing Saddles when Bart, the sherriff (played by Cleavon Little) points a gun at his own head and says "Hold it! Next man makes a move, the n!gger gets it!"
We, The People, seem to be saying to our elected officials "if you don't give us more entitlements (or bail outs), we will not elect you."
Our leaders (whom we deserve, given our attitude), 'give' us EXACTLY what we ask for.
And, we keep electing them .. while destroying ourselves in the process.

oh, and
another shameless blog plug. Part Deux of the GOE 3 story is up, and there's a liberal who keeps coming back for more of our, shall we say, 'education' at Part 1.

Great, historically astute,
well written. The paragraph on "meddlers" is particularly insightful. I have recognized this at work in today's Left, but have never articulated it so well. I do have one trifling quibble. Conservatives won't need it spelled out to them, but there could be some lib readers here in search of intellectual honesty. The word "Altruism" should have been preceeded with with "counterfeit," or "pretend" or some such. As we all know, actual altruism is personal, and involves self-sacrifice. Confiscating and redistributing the fruits of other people's hard work and risks taken is not compassionate, and is not altruism. File under "preaching to the choir."

Hueguenot, thanks ..

I agree with your points regarding "counterfeit" altruism.
