Just look at the anger at Republicans by conservatives over the Sotomayor hearings. They will go after the ones that vote "yes."

Instead of trying to defeat Democrats, they go after Republicans. You are right, the heat comes from both sides for the GOP. That's why we are in this mess.

I heard a guest on the Dennis Miller show say that he'd rather be principled than win...doesn't he get that only the winners get to make the rules and get their "principles" addressed and be protected?

The losers get to ignore how much better this nation was under GWB and the Republicans and whine all about issues that the majority of Americans don't care about. At least until the Dems decide that a liberal's right to not believe in a God trumps your right to pray in public or their right to abort their baby trumps a doctor's right to his/her conscience.
