What has become of the GOP?
The majority which were Republicans have now set the stage for a total collapse of Republican values. Whatever happens in November is their own fault, where are the true Republican's?

Legislating approval
Ken,
thanks for your comments on my post. What I predict is a backlash by the majority. If gays think that this ruling will "protect them from discrimination" they all have deluded themselves. These people are trying to legislate approval for their unorthodox lifestyle. But the harder they try to legislate their way to approval, the more resolved the majority of society will become. This is wrong, it's unconstitutional, it's immoral and now it is causing permanent damage to the children of homosexuals.

Let Me Be Clear
I would never use the force of law against a homosexuals person's right to life or property. I do not wish ill on anyone who indentifies as a homosexual.
But I see no reason for the state to issue marriage licenses to a couple that is missing a groom or a bride. Marriage is about uniting the sexes. Take away that, and it isn't marriage.
I also think it is wrong to intentionally deprive a child of a mother or father - which is what people do when they use a third party to conceive/bear a child to be raise by two women or two men, or a single woman or a single man. This court ruling will make it easier to adopt children into such situation as well.

Gay marriage
You know what that means? Alimony and Child support is legal! If marriage is a holy matrimony, there is a separation between church and state, and if there is a separation, alimony and child support IS AGAINST THE LAW! Marrying someone in California or in any state needs two things to make it legal:P
01) State Seal
02) Secretary of State signature
What other document is comparable to that? A Business license. Your marriage is recognized in your state as a business, a corporation and when you divorce, everything is split 50/50...like a corporation. Marriage was NEVER a holy matrimony but a business. Think of it, married couples have deductions while single folks don't. So stop whining and realize that gay marriage like your marriage is a frigging business.

why should the state have anything to do

Your nanny-state blather is disconcerting.
Ken, you're sounding like a gay activist with your
the state should allow this and not allow that.
Grow up!
Get the state out of this racket.

The State Has An Interest
The state has an interest in licensing marriage. The state does not force this license on you. It is voluntary. You can have a ceremony and commitment and contracts and live together without the state license. You can have a marriage without the state license.
But the state does have an interesting in licensing marriage because male and female couplings can produce children, and the state has an interest in the well-being of children.
To truly get the state of it, you'd need to get the state out of divorces, child support, and many other things.

the state should get out of divorces too
but not child support.
Since the state does have an interest in those who cannot reasonably
take care of themselves.
Based on your definition the state has an interest in licensing gay
marriages too, because they also can often (usually?) "produce'
(probably not the right word for it - "lead to" is better) children.
All the gay marriages I've known have eventually had children!
Production indeed!
