The problem with helmet laws is that they are the springboard for trans-fat bans, smoking restrictions, "fat taxes" and who knows what else. The government is best that governs least.

Yes of course "the slippery slope". What worries me about these principled stances is that a future politician could concede ground on these somewhat peripheral issues and thus win the label of "libertarian", yet do nothing on the biiger issues.
