One of my sisters is a vegetarian and the other buys only free-range meat (which is much more expensive by the way, and she is NOT wealthy) and has raised her own chickens. I don't feel as strongly as they do, but I would support outlawing livestock practices that are cruel. I would be willing to pay a little more. I have often wondered if I could eat meat if I had to kill it myself....I'm pretty sure I would become a vegetarian.

Showing great personal restraint, I am going to refrain from bringing this back to abortion, I think the article alluded to it anyway.

Thanks for your thoughts. I admire your sisters for acting on principle more than I do on this issue. I buy only free-range eggs, but I'm not a vegetarian, nor do I limit myself to meat that was produced without such cruelty. Hopefully I'll build up enough guilt to emulate your sisters and also become active on this issue (beyond the easy step of posting a column on my blog).
