Since most of those that died during his tenure were lost during the 1958-1961 "Great Chinese Famine" and since a good deal of this was due to natural diasters beyond the control of the CCP (which is why in China it is called San Nian Ziran Zaihai (Three years of natural diasters or san nian kunnan (three years of difficulties). Murder is the intent to kill and Mao or the CCP never had an intent to kill anyone during the famine. It was not as with Stalin in the Ukraine to use food as a weapon against the population.

Not saying Mao was a good guy, but he wasn't the worst mass murderer in history either.

Would you want to live under his rule? It sounds like you have been educated with the wrong information. Our university system today is loaded with professors who have a socalist/Communist agenda and they attempt to sanitize people like Mao, Stalin, Marks and even Hitler. All these men were brutal dictators. Check out Mao on another site.
