GREECE - I THANK YOU

Jesse

thanks for the reminder. I have a Philosophy Minor, and Plato's Republic still sticks in my as one of the quintessential pieces I've ever read. The Greeks had it going on, and our in-coming administration better heed some of the lessons in their history (the Spartan's stong military not being the least).

I never relized that:

"The biggest threat to our current way of life happened 2500 years ago.... The Greeks saved Western Civilization from becoming part of the Persian Empire." That must not be forgotten...

Living strong principles like 'Discipline is the price you pay for freedom' had to have been a must in their culture at that time.

If God Said It Was My Time to Die.....

but gave me the choice of going anywhere and anytime in history, I have only two places that I would choose from: The Pass of Thermoplyae or The Alamo.

(I would probably pick the Alamo because of Crockett; but I would not argue if God selected for me Thermoplyae. Plus, the uniforms of the Spartans are pretty neat.)

We owe a debt to the Spartans; because of their sacrifice we have a history of democracy and freedom.

That's cool you have a philosophy minor. I have a great interest in philosophy. I guess on TH, we all do to some extent. I have studied people to the point that I know people better than most psychologists do. I seem to know what people are going to do before they do. Brett Favre is no exception. Plato, Socrates, and other Greek philosphers laid the ground work for the best way to run a nation. And I totally agree with you about the lessons Obama should learn from them. Well, he did use those Greek columns.

Cindy

I don't think most people do. That quote was very true, especially for that time as you said. If the Spartans didn't take that saying to the Nth degree, there might not have ever been a United States. Thanks for the comment.

Two good choices. The Spartans sacrificed so much, as well as the rest of Greece. Athens was burned to the ground, but the Greeks would later on defeat Xerxes and stop his ambition from taking over Europe.

The facts are right but....

With the former Czech Prez denying GW, with the Senate Minority Report showing it too, and with over 600 scientists believing that it is a fraud, so what? Waxman, and his comm.in the House are hell-bent to go ahead with Legislation that the Pubs cannot stop. Obama , in the snow and cold , mentioned it yesterday. 79% of the sheeple believe him if not Gore. So, just how will this absurdity be stopped even though it is a phoney understanding of climate. So far,I see no one who can stop this reversion to even more socialism. That is just fact. Some Ras. polls show that there is a slight majority who do not, do not believe the GW baloney but that does not reflect any opposition that matters. And Bush, McCain and the Pubs failed to even get any, any energy independence.

I think you meant this for another post, but that's cool. Thanks for the comment. There was a story last year that global warming skepticism was on the rise, even amongst high school students. You're right about Bush, McCain, and the republicans over the energy independence. Russia is holding eastern Europe hostage with energy. If we were drilling, and had been for a while now, we could be selling that energy to other countries and actually make money. It's not just about energy independence. It's about fiscal responsibility. It's about weakening Russia and OPEC (including Venezuela). Their failure will have repercussions.

very good post

about something the Liberals have no interest in. Discipline and the personal responsibility of individuals for themselves and others.

Jesse

Learn from them, The Greek Empire died as much from within as from without.

The Spartans

remind me of old-school MARINES!

Dave

Thanks. I think not just liberals, but every American should live life a little more disciplined. Some a LOT more. Living for oneself will be the undoing of this country, if not the entire world. Having pride in one's nation is the first step to making it better. The Spartans knew that better than anyone. It was that same spirit that led to the American Revolution.

Craw

Yeah, special forces even. That's basically what the Spartans were. The elite of the elites. If it wasn't for Ephialtes revealing the secret pass to Xerxes, who knows how long the Spartans could have withstood the Persians. Perhaps they would have even defeated them right there.

Jesse, If Only...

...the loony left of America had even half the, ahem, manly parts as the Spartans, perhaps I would not have the worry that I do have over how fast they will bow down and kiss the butts of the muslim world in the hope of saving their own empty little heads. But, alas, I think the heyday of my America is over; hence my post today. I pray that I am wrong.

Jan@Oasis

I agree with you and believe as well that America's heyday is over. I think the America we all know and love is in for a crashing halt. There is a biblical prophecy written about America in Isaiah 18:1-3. You should check it out. The other country mentioned is Iraq. Will check out your post. Thanks for commenting.
