Federalism

During tough ecomonic times, elected officials are more than happy to give control over to the federal government. From Medicaid to just recently here in Michigan protection efforts over our great lakes.

It's a way of "saving money" or as the government actually does... move it around. As for the interstate commerce clause I think you have a good point on respecting state law in regards to individual state commerce. However, when it comes to the protection of equal civil rights, states have such a bad history with it, a strong judical effort is needed to insure true equality.
