I only hope you get elected. I'll look forward to getting the "straight dope" on this government deal. What work, what doesn't and why...and no one can better explain it than you I'm betting!

Being from a neightboring
county, and btw, we have a common friend, I would ask: do you mean if some is attacking me, your government is not going to help me?
Obviously, if the attack is a physical, you are going to say no. But what if the attack is a financial one, a legal one, an environmental one, or one that involves discrimination, will your gov't help me?
And being the good Republican you are, what happens if my business fails? I should get no help from the gov't regardless of how long it takes. Isn't that Social Darwinism?
It isn't the bringing up of individual responsibility that I disagree with Republicans about, it is the reductionism of placing all responsibility with the individual which causes me to disagree with Republicans.

You have a lot to learn about Republicans. To begin we don't believe the individual should rely on himself/herself. We just know it's foolish, very, very foolish, to rely on government to bail you out of anything.
What if your business fails? In America, government has made is so that you can go bankrupt and start over. Your creditors can't hold you in slavery and you can be absolved. That is government working for you and Republicans I know support this. Now. You want us to show up with bags of cash? Sorry. No can do.
And so on and so on........

And it is foolish, unless you are into gangs, to rely on the private sector. After all, you can't vote for the private sector.
As for relying on the gov't, it is the job of the citizens to make sure that the gov't represents them rather than those who have money.

Yeah but gov't represents them for what? A cradle to grave mentality? A payoff for your vote?
And define the evil private sector. I'm talking about people working with people. Acually your gang analogy isn't bad. Take health care. iwas born in the 50's in Pittsburgh Pa at St Anns Hospital. A catholic hospital ran by the church. No federal funding back and no health insurance for things like a birth. Just money from contributions. A lot of pancake breakfasts and good people giving to help others less fortunate. Not from a form 1040. For treatment, people of means paid the going rate. Others paid what they could, made arrangments or just accepted their treatment as charity. So in essence, maybe it could be called a gang. The Catholic church and the Shriners! If that's how you would to put it OK! But it was people running an organized effort to help other people without relying on gov't.
Worked out pretty well.
And people do vote for the private sector only they vote everyday. Not just during an election cycle. They vote with their dollars and their time.

caday5 - I don't know if you're being
deliberately dense for the sake of arguing a point, or if that is actually your case, but individuals need to realize that, as you cede more responsibilities and powers to the government and its faceless bureaucrats, that you lose your freedoms in the process. Your implied statement that the Republican Party favors big business is laughable and has been a dem talking point for the thinking-challenged for years, despite all of the evidence to the contrary. Back to the point, the "safety" that you seem to find in a government that ensures no failures, and equality of outcome despite the inequality of input is not safety at all, but a prescription for mediocrity. You really aren't suited for the Republican Party - you have a parasitic attitude where you like to penalize other people for their hard work so that you can maintain a false sense of security.

What is the alternative to the gov't not helping? Is it not Social Darwinism? Those on the fringes for whom there is little to no opportunity will show, and understandably so, no respect for a system that shows no respect for them in the first place.
If you want to understand who in the private sector is evil, take a look at the deregulation allowed Wall Street bankers and investors. Take a look at Enron. Take a look at those who pollute the environment. Take a look at those who fire whistle blowers. Need I go on?
The desire for power is just as strong in the private sector as it is in the public sector and our country has a long history of those in the with money and power abusing labor and using law enforcement to silence dissent.
Private charities are fine but there are far more people in need than our charities can reach. In addition, we are talking about a right to life issue and whether all of us have both the individual responsibility to do what we can for ourselves and societal responsibilities to help those in need.

I hope you realize that as power grows, so does corruption; one doesn't need absolute power to become corrupt. And that is true for those in the private sector as much as it is for those in the public sector. And much, not all, of our protection from those in the private sector who abuse power comes from those in the public sector provided that we the citizens do more than just vote to maintain our democracy. We have to work hard to make sure that our government represents us on a day to day basis.
BTW, I never said equality in outcome.

Need you go on? Yes. But please for the sake of us don't.
You mention Enron. Well they're gone if you haven't noticed. A victim of their own greed and failure to play the game right. Ken Lay died and others are in prision so strike up the band for Social Darwinism.
Let me ask you this caday, besides tryin to force me by government fiat (which will shoot me or jail me if I fail to comply, talk about compassion) what are you doing to help others?
What percentage of your time and income do you give to fill in the cracks?
How much time do you go door to door asking for money for the indigent?
And since you seem to hate corporate America so much I probably shouldn't expect a response because why would you use the energy (we know how those evil energy company's love to pollute) to power a computer?
It's everybody else isn't it caday? And if the world isn't perfect it's because somebody else is evil.
Go make some sacrifices and do some heavy lifting caday.
Your existence is as much a part of the 'problem' as anyone else.
