Wonderful bit of writing. I do believe that with both parties battling it out over issues, a compromise somewhere in the middle is usually created, but I never looked at it from the perspective you note. In some way the two parties spend so much time attacking each other that they are able to "gloss over" some of the weaknesses in their own arguments/theories.
