This is an interesting topic....lots of issues to discuss here.
I would say there's nothing wrong iwth the personal drive to gain more so long as one has the spiritual maturity to recognize that if they never get more, then they are blessed.
That's what we're missing as a nation.

First, congratulations to your husband on his 86th. My Mom, a youngster at 82, loves her computer and spends hours on-line everyday.
The problems you cite are all well founded. Unfortunately, it begins to look like democrats are going to help lower our expectations. Maybe we can call it the "Denmark Plan"?

Proverbs 16:31 says...
..."White hair is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness." Spiritual maturity should go with maturity, and as you point out, it is a vanishing commodity. Saw your comments over on ShiningCity's blog and dropped by; will do so more often. I am always interested in hearing from your end of the age spectrum. Congratulations to you and your husband both on birthdays and anniversaries!

Husband, who turned 86 yesterday, was saying regretfully last night , "We should be a happy, peaceful nation. We have so much."
Thats because emjayne has just turned 22. The rest of us are discontented.

So funny that you raised the subject of the Danish happiness study. I'm married to someone who grew up in Europe in the 60's & 70's (Denmark, Germany and Paris) so I've heard first hand about what it's like to live there. There is much unemployment and very high taxes. Most folks had summer "houses" by the water, but in reality they were 400 sq. ft. shacks without electricity or running water. So I found it humurous when the media was reporting that Danish people are the happiest in the world, then waited until the very end of the segment to give the punchline as to why.

Interesting!! I wonder who did that survey!
Gee, if low expectations lead to happiness, the people in Africa should be delirious, right?
As usual, don't believe half of what the media try to shovel on you.
Just look at the global warming hysterics.

I have a 22yr old kid. Its worse to be that young now than it was when I was 22 (1973). How happy can they be in Denmark? They have one of the highest tax rates in the world and one of the highest suicide rates.

Yes I am just happy I will not be around for much more than 10 years, more or less. Maybe it's just old age talking...I suspect every generation, as it aged, thought the country was going to hell. But I know the country is getting too liberal for me. So no, I would not like to be 22 over again. (1949!)

Wow I didn't realize Denmark was that bad! Where the heck did that program get the statistics for it being the happiest in the world!

$2M????
That's an INSULT to baseball and basketball players. I don't understand how guys in a NON-CONTACT sport demand so much money. Then again, to me any athlete who makes $1M per year is highly overpaid. Heck, if I can't be President, how about Commish of the NFL, NBA, or MLB for a couple of years? I'd give the games back to the fans, while pizzing off the owners, players, and refs/umps.

but I agree with you. it's obscene!!
I will second your nomination for commish.
and then maybe the fans won't have to spend a week's pay to get in and eat a hotdog.

Not to mention one of the worst intravenous drug use rates. Lots of people laying around shooting up. Why not, they don't have jobs. If that's not bad enough, the kids 11 to 16 are allowed in bars TO DRINK. And this is perfectly ok with the adults. They don't see anything wrong with it. The young kids are VERY promiscous. Surprise, surprise.

The problem with the Democrats is that they raise the expectations of the "needy" and lower the expectations of the middle class , never mind the small business owner.

Oh my God! I can't believe you mentioned Andre Rieu (watched him last night!). About a month or so ago I had a dream where he owned a restraunt and was trying out some new salads for the menu and he wanted my opinon! We were sitting in a very european outdoor eaterie at a table, and he was looking at me very intently, hanging on my every word. To this day, whenever I see him, I think of it and it makes me laugh! I have some CRAZY dreams.

The shows he puts on are fantastic and getting more and more elaborate. I had no idea he had done so many! I think he said 15? or was it 17?
We try to always see his shows.

I saw him with his wife once who I think is his manager and is involved in the production of all his shows. And you're right they are fantastically elaborate, and getting more so.
Did you see the one filmed outdoors? I can't remember if it was in Cortona or Holland. It seemed as though the architecture was Italian so my guess is that it was in Tuscany. I can always be wrong though. There were people of all ages from little children to grandparents.
I'm not sure if it's just me, but he seems to have a marvelous sense of humor!

This one last night was another outside..I don't know where but he was speaking somthing that sounded like German. And the crowd was the same...all ages and having a marvelous time. It's at least the second one I have seen that was outside.
The dancing and the voices were unreal. I saw his wife once, also, but I don't remember when.
Yes he has a great sense of humor and uses it constantly in the shows.
Shining City hadn't heard of him so I told her she has to watch PBS for his shows and join the hordes of adoring women. :-))

Has to have an appreciation for foreign men though. It's funny because I had an aquaintance in HS who was obsessed with the foreign exchange students. Pratically attacked them as they walked through the doors, while I was completely uninterested. Irony being what it is, I'm the one who married a foreigner!

I forgot about him being a furriner! I think he comes from Denmark? or Belgium? He speaks perfect English but several other languages as well.
This last show had subtitles in English. There was a girl from Australia singing and she was awesome!
Oh , isn't it nice to have a rest from politics. Peppermint's posting on Goshawk was such fun with not a word about politics.
The news people keep it up but I guess there isn't anything else to talk about.
