Is the Lack of Funding Really the Issue?

Public Schools

Sir...I believe that the problem with schools these days lies not in lack of funding, although I'm sure the schools could use more money for programs other than the three Rs, but a profound lack of parenting.

Parents are too often disengaged from their children's needs because a) they were too young to be parents in the first place, b) they focus too much on the material, i.e., a house they can't afford, credit card debt out of control, and the need for a two income family to compete with the Joneses, and/or c) some folks just shouldn't breed.

I truly believe that teachers hold the future of our country in their hands (our kids) and should be paid more than doctors and CEO's. I'm sorry that teaching is lower on the list of priorities than the above mentioned professionals.

Another problem in public schools right now is the leftist "touchy feely" idea of moral relativism, and the fact that there are lots of parents out there who abdicate their parental responsibilities to the schools, then expect said schools to turn out Einsteins, when they spend so much time in loco parentis, and not teaching. There are also those parents who don't care one way or another whether their kids learn anything or not, AND the other side of that coin, the leftist teachers who spend their time inculcating and indoctrinating, instead of teaching, thus turning out all manner of good little leftist soldiers who know little or nothing about history, grammar, or math. It makes me sick.

I have a job where I deal with the results of our public schools here in Texas, and these kids don't have a clue how to have a business phone conversation or write a business-oriented email. Where are they going to get jobs when the food nazis close down the fast-food joints?

Different argument but...

I agree with you totally about parents and the leftist embrace of relativism. Relativism is killing our country and is something I write about often.

I was mainly focusing on the false premise that schools suffer from lack of funding when the truth is that they lack fiscal responsibility and wisdom in the purchases they make. They waste so much money then cry that the public is not funding them sufficiently.

Our public schools are collapsing and need serious restructuring.

That's where competion comes in...

...lowers prices, improves quality of product everytime it's tried.
